The festival is held to express gratitude to the pioneers of brush making, recalling Emperor Saga who was known as one of the three most excellent calligraphers. Used brushes are cremated in a sacred fire to appreciate their work. Brushes made by professional craftsmen are sold at reasonable prices. The passage to the Shinto shrine is decorated with 10.000 brushes.
Renowned calligraphers write some characters on a specially prepared paper the size of 20 tatami mats using a huge brush. It is worth watching.
