The mine, one of the biggest in Japan, was exploited from 1600 to 1700 (during the Edo Era). In 2007 it was registered as a World Heritage site.
The 600 meter Rhugenji Shaft was opened in 1715. Visitors can still see remaining marks of chisels, so we can imagine how strenuously the miners worked.
Admission: 410 yen for people over 12 years old 200 yen for elementary school students
