The area was prosperous as a manor which belonged to the influential Shimogamo Shinto Shrine of Kyoto during the Heian era (710-794). That is why the town is called Little Kyoto. The atmosphere from those days is well preserved. There are lots of photo spots, such as wealthy merchant residences which ran salt farms and sake breweries, traditional stone paved streets, temples with a long history and alleys with nostalgic tastes.
