The mountain-top, three-storied and four layered castle in Momoyama Nanban style was built by Hiroie Kikkawa, the first lord of the feudal domain of Iwakuni in 1608. Eight years after the construction, it was demolished by the decree “One Castle in One Domain”. The present castle was reconstructed in 1962.
The castle tower is a historical museum and houses a detailed replica of Kintai Bridge, some photos, samurai armor and weapons. The top floor is an observatory, so visitors can enjoy a marvelous panoramic view of the city.
