In the Muromachi era (1336-1573), the town flourished as a castle town. During the Edo era the city was bustling as an administrative center.
Traditional buildings with white-washed walls and black roof tiles are highly valued and designated as a national important cultural asset.
Visitors can enjoy exploring around in a historical ambience and tasting some sweets they can purchase at the former merchant houses and warehouses. Some hands-on experiences are available, too.
